Akrotiri - Santorini Akrotiri was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions ever. It was found again in 1860, when a group of workers were digging there to build the Suez Canal. Some of his paintings and artistic pieces give a glimpse of his time of splendor, between the 20th and 17th centuries BC.
