English is a useful bully language

Hi everyone! This first article is about me (only a little bit) and about the funniest and most useful things in life: languages!!!

Why English?

It's one of the most spoken languages all around the world but...

First of all, let me introduce myself: I'm an Italian girl who's currently spending an Erasmus year in Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria. This first article will provide a brief presentation of my channel and some general information about me.

Why I'm in Bulgaria?- Well, as many of my colleagues all around the world, I started feeling uncomfortable in my home University: The little atheneum always had crowded classes and many teachers have lost their enthusiasm a long time ago.  I felt trapped, out of my place and useless. Every day I couldn't avoid to cry my heart out. My parents were as desperate as me but they didn't know how to help me. I needed to get out of that situation. It turned out that an Erasmus experience was the right solution. Confronting yourself with a totally different environment, strive to learn a new language, meeting people from all around the world...this makes me feel alive.

What am I studying in Italy?-I'm studying Foreign Languages. This is my last year; after graduation, I would like to take a Master's Degree in International Relations....and yes, I'm one of those fools who want to end wars, global warming and so on.

Why did you open this channel?- The reason is very simple: I need money. In order to achieve my goals and make my dreams come true, I need money: they can't buy happiness, but they can make the life of a student that is interested in traveling and get to know new cultures much easier.

English: what kind of problem I have with this language?- Let me clarify one point: I'm studying English at University, even if I don't like it.

Why?

It's like the "bully" among the languages: since we are kids we are obliged to learn English. It's like if it is the only language is worthy studying: everyone uses this every day: students, young and old people...we all use English words even while speaking our own language.

Why is it so employed?

The reason for it' spread all around the world is related to historical situations: British Colonies  still use English as their official language or at least the second most spoken language, Moreover, many countries in the African Continent have chosen English as the official language for a cultural reason:  it's like a common denominator for all the different dialects spoken in a single region (although,  it still remains subordinated to those dialects mainly because of the lack of resources in the educational system, wars, and conflicts between tribes or entire nations and also because of other reasons we will analyze soon or later...).

So, we can say that is mostly for a matter of convenience that English is widely used. Unfortunately, even if it allows communication between people and the circulation of ideas and knowledge, it is causing a " standardization" in languages' studies.

If you don't speak English you are like an outcast, especially if you want to achieve important goals in your career. Ergo, we start thinking that with our good proficiency in English, we have the world in our hends. This is partially true...and partially false:

a language is not only a medium for people to communicate but is also an archive of the story an culture of an entire population (not "nation": this is a political term that doesn't provide any reference to the cultural background, which includes language as well). Wars, foreign dominations, political and social changes...language is like an ice-carrot in which we can find proof of historical events.

The language is a living being because it is used by living beings: it changes with us, it lives with us, it dies with us.

It would be such a shame losing all those things that are inside and behind a language.

Learning a new idiom is like a voyage, potentially a neverending one, and like every voyage is full of surprises... .

BUT I will use English in my articles to reach as many people as possible (at least until we find another common language or I invent one by myself...).

Thanks to all the people that have read till the end.
