Return To E D N III - Lost Planet 2 (Episode 1)

2023-01-02 15:30:53

4 years after the release of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition in 2010 Capcom released its official sequel with the anticlimactic name of: Lost Planet 2. Aside from the terrible naming choice the second title was and still is to my eyes incredible.

Do you remember sci-fi weapons, mechs, bad monsters and amazing explorable landscapes from the first title?

Well Lost Planet 2 is the same... except EVERYTHING is MUCH MORE!

Weapons are CRAZIER, mechs are STRONGER, monsters are much BIGGER and explorable scenarios are WIDER and much more DIVERSE!

Yes, as you might have already guessed Lost Planet 2 improves upon its predecessor in EVRY POSSIBLE WAY.

-------------------------------------------------------

BIG CHANGES

Aside from all the refinements that the second title brings to the table there are some things to keep in mind.

Coming up first is the way the game is intended to be played. What I mean by that is: the game at its roots is a multiplayer game and its missions are designed to be played as a team of 4 players and are much different from the single player missions that were offered in the first title.

Nowadays this might cause problems as there are very few players that still play the game and if you wish to play it nonetheless you are limited to use AI bots as players replacements (thank you Capcom for including this option).

Is playing with bots the same? Of course not, the game experience you could have with real players when the game first came out was simply stunning. The missions are filled with both primary and secondary objectives to complete and are usually split in various segments that allows for checkpoints. Funny cutscenes are not missing in between missions/checkpoints and the most important thing of all is that the missions require cooperation from the players to be completed successfully.

By using the term cooperation I mean it for real as there are certain bosses which require the players to organize and take on different roles to even be able to damage them.

-------------------------------------------------------

A CHANGE OF SCENERY

Another major difference from the first title is that thermal energy is almost never a problem due to the fact that there are much hotter landscapes in this title, the stored energy can be used instead to open chests, power energy weapons and drive mechs.

Speaking of landscapes the variety is not lacking at all, they range from jungles to deserts, underwater caves, cities and even space stations!

-------------------------------------------------------

THE STORY

The last major difference is the storyline, it is not a single one, instead it's actually composed by several intertwined small stories which take place in different areas of the planet itself.

The amazing thing is that these stories all meet and come to an epic end together. I also have to mention that every story arc ends in an epic battle with a giant boss which gives a big rewarding feeling once defeated.

-------------------------------------------------------

Overall Lost Planet 2 was a big success and a welcome improvement over the previous title.

Personally I had a lot of fun replaying it even if I couldn't do it with real players.

The combination of the core game mechanics plus the refined boss battles, the epic storyline and the cooperative mode can only be described with a single word: fun, the game was and still is simply fun as every game should aim to be.
