quello che avete letto é il second conditional. In inglese le frasi ipotetiche sono 4.  Questa, ad esempio, si usa per indicare qualcosa di improbabile che, se fosse vero, darebbe una conseguenza che potrebbe essere: 
Certa ( would)
Molto probabile ( could)
Forse ( might) 
Di logica, sarebbe giusto ( should ) 
Il verbo condizionale puro, invece, si fa mettendo il verbo al passato.
Ex. 
Verbo forma base.      Past simple.   Conditional
Listen                           listened          Listened.   
Ascoltare
Speak.                            Spoke.            Spoke
Parlare

se invece il condizionale deve indicare una probabilità allora si usano would,could, might  should seguito dal verbo alla forma base  nelle modalità indicate sopra

Ex. Ascoltare ( listen ) 
Sicuramente ascolterei ( I would listen )
Probabilmente ascolterei (  I could listen)
Forse ascolterei ( I might listen)
Dovrei ascoltare ( I should listen) 
Quindi, ricapitolando si fa:
IF + CAUSA + EFFETTO.
IF + CONDIZIONALE PURO + COND. PROB. 
IF I  HELPED YOU YOU WOULD BE LESS TIRED
