USA'S FBI'S INTERNET CRIME DIVISION ISSUED A WARNING !
FBI"s of USA internet crime division issued a warning about a new trend in online scams where crooks are using online dating sites to recruit and trick victims into laundering stolen money.
Till recently, the so-called romance/confidence scammers, who used dating sites as their hunting ground, befriended a person to establish a romantic or platonic relationship. Then, they would abuse this relationship by requesting money on various pretenses - such as for airfare to visit, for bail after being imprisoned, legal fees, and other.
Now, such scammers tweaked their gameplan. Instead, they are now recruiting victims to become money mules.
While the victim is unlikely to lose any money, they are likely face legal or financial consequences for participating in such a scheme.
In the past, popular tricks included fake job ads where the victims thought they were employed at legitimate firms were actually shuffling stolen funds via fraudulently established LLCs.
Actors groom their victims over time and convince them to open bank accounts under the guise of sending or receiving funds ... These accounts are used to facilitate criminal activities for a short period of time. If the account is flagged, it may be closed and the actor will either direct the victim to open a new account or being grooming a new victim.
Give vague answers to specific questions.
Claims to be recently widowed or claims to be a US service member serving overseas.
Disappears suddenly from the site then reappears under a different name using the same profile information.
