El Tamal:
A Mexican Delight ❤️
Surely when you see the photo of this article you will wonder what is that?! You may not even understand the image, well, let me tell you about this Mexican delight.
It´s the most common and has become part of the daily breakfast of almost all mexicans families.
This is the famous Tamal, (in Nahuatl language: tamalli which means wrapped) a Mesoamerican food that dates back between 800 and 500 B.C.
It´s made out from corn or rice dough and can carry everything you can imagine, red meat, white, vegetables, spices, fruits, sauces, etc. To cook them they wrap them in the corn, banana, or avocado leafs and steam them, there are many types of tamales: oaxaqueños, “de dedo”, corn etc, almost every state has its own variation of tamale.
This is a sweet tamale, with raisins, but there are also pineapple tamales and they are usually yellow, very tasty.
We put the tamale in a bread called bolillo and name it "Guajolota" it is a carbohydrate bomb lol, I must tell you that although it is very tasty, it is not recommended to eat it daily, it is a delight from time to time, specially in days like today when it’s very cold.
So now you know, when you come to visit us, you will find them in almost every corner. You can identify it by looking for a man or lady with a steaming can, they are tamales! eat one accompanied by an “Atole” (a hot drink made out of corn, very tasty too) and support local businesses! :)
